Help NBEHT choose a new name!

North Berwick Environment and Heritage Trust (NBEHT) needs a new name!

NBEHT is in the process of becoming a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). This modern type of charity is a legal entity in its own right, which will give us more flexibility and security. An SCIO can undertake transactions at its own hand, enter into leases and contracts, and raise large-scale funds – all of which will be especially important for the Trust’s larger projects, such as St Andrew’s Kirk Ports.

This is a chance to shape the future of the Trust, to bring our charitable purposes up-to-date, and to make sure that they encompass not only everything that the Trust currently does, but everything that we might wish to do in the next 10 or 20 years. However, it also means we will need to have a new name – which must be at least slightly different from our current name. This is because the two charities will exist side-by-side for a few months – while the process is completed and the assets transferred to the new charity.

Please help us to choose a new name!

In choosing a new name, there are a few things to bear in mind:

  • It would be good to have a slightly shorter name, which could be abbreviated to an easier acronym. However, your Trustees believe the words ‘North Berwick’ should be included in our new name, which means the name will probably still be longer than is ideal.

  • We can continue to use the word ‘Trust’ in our name if we wish to. Some Trustees want to retain the word ‘Trust’ because of its positive connotations, but what do you think?

  • The Trust was established in the early 1970s as North Berwick Environment Trust (the word ‘Heritage’ was only added recently), when the word ‘Environment’ meant primarily the built environment. However, these days the word ‘Environment’ is more associated with the ‘green’ agenda (addressing climate change, increasing sustainability and improving biodiversity, etc). The Trust continues to be concerned about these issues and to support local charities specialising in these areas (such as Sustaining North Berwick), but they are not the Trust’s primary focus – so perhaps we should drop the word ‘Environment’ from our title?

With the help of Sallie Bale (www.monumentmarketing.co.uk), we have devised a Google survey with a list of possible new names. We would be most grateful if you could help us choose a new name by completing the survey – it should only take a few minutes.

Here is the link to the surveyhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfjGnYfr82fQov7CndTg9lGMZVOET2ExLnSHM27mLFvhdUz-g/viewform?usp=pp_url

Please let us know which name you prefer – and if you have any other thoughts or ideas for a new name, please let us know.

With very many thanks for your help.

Olwyn Owen (on behalf of NBEHT Trustees)
